Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program 2026

Every year, low to moderate income families in our area leave federal dollars unclaimed simply because they do not know about the VITA program, are unsure if they qualify, or feel overwhelmed by the entire tax preparation process.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, or VITA, helps change that. VITA mobilizes and trains local volunteers to provide free, high quality tax preparation for working individuals and families. This service saves taxpayers the cost of paid tax preparation and helps them claim every tax credit for which they are eligible.

If you generally make less than seventy thousand dollars per year, we encourage you to take advantage of this free service and keep more of your hard earned money in your pocket.

Prefer to use a Virtual Filing Option?
You may have your tax return prepared virtually without a tax site appointment. To use this free service option, please download and complete the IRS intake document Intake/Interview Form. Email the completed form to VITAcounties@gmail.com and you will be contacted by phone with further instructions.

Please remember to bring the following with you for your appointment:

Driver’s license or another photo I.D.
Social Security cards for yourself and all dependents
Bank account information for direct deposit of any refund
W-2 from each employer
Documentation of all other income (1099R, Social Security Statements, etc.)
Form 1095-A if you received health-care coverage through the marketplace
- Unsure if you need this form? – call 1-800-318-2596 – select “tax” from options
If you received overtime pay in 2025 – last pay period paystub for 2025
IPPIN – An identity protection PIN (IPPIN) is a six-digit number that prevents someone else from filing a tax return using your Social Security number (SSN).
- **If you have a pin already but do not have the letter – go to IRS.gov and log into online account to get PIN or call 1-800-908-4490

*If filing a joint return, both spouses must be present to sign the tax return.
